James A. Garfield Middle School has reason to celebrate! The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) has presented the Middle School with the well-regarded Momentum Award, recognizing the middle school’s significant academic progress as reported on the 2023–2024 Ohio School Report Cards.

This highly selective honor is reserved for schools and districts that have raised their Performance Index by more than 3 points while also maintaining a value-added rating of 4 or more stars. Out of the more than 3,100 public school buildings in Ohio, only about 6% have achieved this level of academic growth.

According to ODEW, the Momentum Award is a testament of your commitment to excellence for your students and your community and celebrates those who consistently give their all to creating a supportive learning environment that fosters growth, collaboration, and success. James A. Garfield Middle School’s dedication to advancing both academic achievement and personal development has proven to produce a profound and lasting impact on its students.

Over the past few years, the middle school has focused on several key strategies to propel student success:

  1. Building Relationships – Through “G-Men Time Activities” and a strong commitment to the District Vision, the staff has fostered a welcoming and supportive atmosphere that places students at the center of all endeavors.

  2. High-Quality Tier 1 Instruction – Middle School Teachers have worked diligently to deliver engaging, top-notch lessons in the classroom, ensuring that each student receives a solid foundation for learning.

  3. Adaptive Scheduling – Middle School Office Staff have made thoughtful adjustments to student schedules, ensuring that learners are placed in the right classes and programs to maximize their potential and success.

  4. Targeted Tier 2 Supports – Programs such as Academic Alert, Success Academy, and the newly developed Mastery Makers Program offer additional help for students who need extra guidance or skill-building.

  5. Collaboration and Commitment – The professional staff has demonstrated flexibility, creativity, and an unwavering willingness to go above and beyond for students—working together to solve problems and celebrate successes.

The Middle School credits the dedication and hard work of the entire community—staff, students, families, and local supporters—for this remarkable accomplishment. “Outstanding job to everyone who played a part in achieving this award for our building,” said Mr. Bartz.  “This recognition not only acknowledges our growth but serves as motivation to continue pushing forward, day after day, to provide the best for our students.   It really is a great time to be a G-Man!”
