Our Community

Garrettsville is a rural community in Portage County, Ohio located 44 miles southeast of Cleveland, 34 miles northeast of Akron, and 31 miles west of Youngstown. The village of Garrettsville has a population of 2,449.

Our School District

The James A. Garfield Local School District encompasses Garrettsville, Freedom Township, Hiram Township, and Nelson Township; as well as many families who choose to open enroll into the district. The district enrollment is approximately 1,200 students and includes one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school all on a unified campus. James A. Garfield was awarded the Auditor of the State Award for a clean audit report, and takes pride in our history of low per-pupil spending, as well as outstanding offerings and performance.

James A. Garfield High School is a four-year public high school enrolling 420 students in grades 9-12. Each year, approximately 50-60 11th and 12th grade students attend Maplewood Career Center for career and technical education.

The JAG Curriculum

Students at James A. Garfield HS attend seven 50-minute class periods and have course offerings in English, math, science, social studies, fine and performing arts, world languages, industrial arts, health and physical education.

Career & Technical (CTE)

JAG is an affiliate with Maplewood Career Center. There are 22 two-year programs in which students earn credentials, licensure, alongside their high school diploma.

Grading System

James A. Garfield High School uses a weighted grading scale to calculate grade point averages (GPA). All subjects are used when computing this GPA. Courses taken prior to 9th grade with high school credit awarded will be factored into the GPA.

Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Credit courses are weighted on a 5.0 scale.

Class rank is used for scholarship purposes, commencement speakers, and official transcripts. Class rank is based on the weighed cumulative GPA of all high school credits where letter grades are issued.
